Many of the oils and moisturizing ingredients used in our products are plant-derived, including: • sunflower seed oil • coconut oil • apricot kernel oil • shea butter • aloe vera • vitamin E These ingredients consist largely of fatty acids and triglycerides, compounds that occur naturally in plants and living organisms. Environmental chemistry research shows these molecules are typically readily biodegradable, meaning microorganisms can break them down through natural biological processes. This allows them to re-enter ecological nutrient cycles rather than persist in the environment for extended periods.
Ocean-Conscious Formulation You may have seen the term “reef safe” used throughout the skincare and sunscreen industry. The reality is that there is currently no globally regulated scientific definition for this term. Wheat straw is an agricultural byproduct left over after wheat harvesting that historically has often been discarded or burned. By incorporating wheat straw fiber into our packaging, we can: • reduce reliance on petroleum-based plastic • repurpose agricultural waste materials • lower the overall environmental footprint of packaging production The result is durable packaging that requires less traditional plastic while maintaining strength and usability.
Natural Preservation Philosophy Cosmetic products require preservation to maintain safety and prevent microbial growth. Many commercial cosmetics rely on strong synthetic preservatives designed to keep products stable for several years. Salt & Shore Co. instead uses a naturally derived preservative system. Because of this approach, our products typically have a recommended shelf life of 6–12 months, reflecting a simpler ingredient system with fewer aggressive stabilizing chemicals.
